This multistory Colonial Revival house, originally constructed in the 1920s, was hampered by a narrow galley-style kitchen on its ground floor, from an era in which a kitchen was meant for food preparation only, separate from the life of a house. The homeowners desired a generous open kitchen that would extend the public space of the ground floor and serve as a gathering place for dinner parties, family meals, and social cooking.
Taking advantage of free buildable area on the lot, the existing kitchen was replaced with a large addition centered around a spacious kitchen island. A new porch with built-in seating extends the social space of the kitchen to the outdoors.
Location: Maplewood, NJ

Project size: 875 SF (addition area)
The new kitchen is centered around an island as gathering place. Generous circulation space surrounding the island allows for free movement and informal social interactions.
An enlarged opening towards the living room and entrance to the house stiches the public social space of the ground floor together. New windows above the sink frame a view to the wooded backyard outside.
A powder room adjacent to the kitchen was refinished to complement the public space of the kitchen.
The new footprint of the addition also allowed for a new mudroom and a more welcoming entrance to the kitchen from the driveway.
A new porch with built-in seating creates both outdoor social space that opens up to the wooded backyard and also a more welcoming side entrance from the driveway & detached garage.
